For the month of April the Book Club will be reading a non-fiction work by author Diane Ackerman. This is the true story about a pair of zookeepers in Warsaw, Poland during World War 2. Jan and Antonia Zabinski, after suffering the bombing of the zoo they ran in the city, managed to rescue several hundred Jewish refugees by smuggling them into the devastated zoo, and housing them there and in their home along with the remainder of the animals. This heartwarming story won the Orion Book Award for the author.
Please join us in reading and discussing this work, and the one that follows. Books will be available in the Sandy Creek library.
This month there is another choice; this book involves a local story. Also during World War 2, an American woman undertakes a remarkable journey to help rescue and provide housing and care for a thousand Jewish refugees from war-torn Europe. These refugees ended up at Ft. Ontario in Oswego, NY, where they stayed throughout the war. This story reminds us what courage and dedication can accomplish.
